10 August 2008. Two Indian doctors introduced their novel power generating system in Chennai by which, activities of our daily life such as walking, climbing stairs and driving through speed breakers would end up producing electricity by their patent-pending simple generator, that acts by a lever which goes down by the weight, setting into rotation, a gear that is attached to a dynamo. The electricity thus produced could be used directly or stored in batteries for later usage.

Dr. Parikumar, an ophthalmologist and Dr Samuel JK Abraham, a cardiac surgeon and also a researcher in stem cells who are collaborators already in corneal stem cells when became victims to power failure that affected their lab one night, ended up trying their ideas into high-heeled shoes, treadmill, stair prototype and similar places wherever our Activities of Daily Life could convert the weight of ones body or a vehicle into electricity and have named it "ADL Energy".

Demonstrating the prototypes of their ideas, Dr Parikumar explained that this energy is emission-free, eco-friendly, and doesn't need water or fossil fuels. The prototype stairs he has designed produces 48W. According to him if his ADL energy stairs with 4 steps are established in Chennai Central Station, we will be able to operate a dynamo to produce approximately 1000 Watts per day. Depending upon the number of stairs and number of step in each stair, this will increase and the same could be fit in restaurants, theaters, and similar public places. A smaller device which he showed fit into the heel of a footwear could produce enough electricity to light a torch and operate music system, cell phone and similar gadgets.

Giving a brief explanation about the idea of incorporating this generating system into a treadmill, Dr Abraham said every morning we can burn our calories to produce electricity which is a win-win for both our health and earth.

This invention has been supported by a public charity trust M/S Hope Foundation, Chennai and M/S Nichi-In Bio Sciences Pvt Ltd, an Indo-Japan joint venture company, who plan to approach Japanese collaborators to improve the device such as avoiding transmission loss, increased efficacy of storage and usage of the produced electricity etc.,
