"Nichi-In to offer total turn-key consultancy services for GMP stem cell lab establishment"

Nichi-In introduces Biotechnology Cell Culture, products
Energy from Activities of Daily Life
Chennai Monday 11th Aug 2008
Human energy will go electric

Chennai, Aug. 10: Tired of frequent power cuts. Just take a walk. Because the more you walk the more electricity you can produce, say two doctors. These doctors also claim that they have invented a device that can produce energy from footwear and anything you walk on - staircases, treadmills and speed-breakers.

Dr Parikumar, an ophthalmologist from Dharmapuri and Dr. Samuel J.K. Abraham, a cardiac surgeon in Japan, are into stem cell research and are associated with Nichi-In Bio Sciences private limited, an Indo-Japanese joint venture company which is into health care and R& D in life sciences. Irked by frequent power cuts at their lab in Dharmapuri, they researched the possibility of using people's daily activities and the pressure from their body weight to produce what they call Activities of Daily Life (ADL) energy.

The two said they had invented an ADL energy device at a cost of Rs17, 000. The device is like a big wheel fixed under the staircase. Whenever the staircase is used, the pressure on the steps makes the wheel rotate. This in turn spins a dynamo to produce energy. “The prototype stairs that we had designed can produce 48 watts of energy,” says Dr Parikumar.
