CHENNAI: Ever thought of generating electricity from high-heeled shoes? That is exactly what two Indian doctors have done by, by finding a novel power generating system using a spring, lever and dynamo, which are fitted into the heel of a shoe, producing electricity.

Japan-based cardiac surgeon Dr Samuel J K Abraham and Dr Parikumar, an Ophthalmologist, on Sunday claimed that ADL (Activities of Daily Life) enabled footwear could produce enough electricity that can be used directly or stored in batteries for later usage. The energy produced can be used to charge a small torch or charge a mobile phone.

The doctors, who are collaborators in corneal stem cell research, explained that the patent-pending simple generator, that acts by a lever, goes down by the weight, setting into rotation a gear that is attached to a dynamo. The whole device can be fitted to a staircase.

Demonstrating the prototypes of the shoe and a staircase, Dr Abraham said ADL enabled energy stairs with four steps will be able to operate a dynamo to produce approximately 1000 watts per day.

Dr Parikumar, claimed to have tested their novel idea in a high-heeled shoe, when they became victims of power failure that affected their research work in the lab. He said the energy produced is emission free, eco-friendly and does not need fossil fuel.

The invention has been supported by the Hope Foundation and Nichi-InBiosciences Ltd, an Indo-Japanese firm. The doctors also revealed that they had plans to approach Japanese collaborators to help in avoiding transmission loss, increasing efficacy of storage and usage of the produced electricity.
